In honor of the Albert Murray Centennial, this symposium examined the Alabama-born Harlemite’s distinctive contribution to American thought and letters. Murray was a novelist, essayist, critic and biographer who saw the blues as an essential feature of American culture, and as a heroic rather than tragic form. A jazz performance by the Michael Carvin Experience rounded out this celebration of Murray.
This Center for Jazz Studies event took place on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Columbia’s Morningside Campus.
