Robert O'Meally on Romare Bearden

Columbia's Zora Neale Hurston Professor Robert G. O'Meally discusses Romare Bearden and the connections between jazz, visual art, and modernism. Far more than simply treating jazz as a subject for art, Professor O'Meally argues that Romare Bearden was a "jazz artist" in both a deeper and a broader sense, employing techniques of improvisation, rhythm, and narrative that he shared with the musicians of his time.
